GRAMMY® Award-winning producer, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, entrepreneur, DJ, philanthropist, and film producer Dallas Austin has spent his life telling stories through music, film, fashion, and technology. With over 50 Billboard Hot 100 hits—including 17 Top Tens—his creative vision has cemented him as one of the most celebrated cultural innovators of the last three decades.

Austin’s work has earned him induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2019), recognition from the Georgia Music Hall of Fame (2006 inductee, 2011 “Most Influential”), the Black Music Honors, the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (Heroes Award), and the Urban League of Atlanta. He has also received the coveted GRAMMY® Award for Best R&B Album, the IMAGE Beacon Award, and the Trailblazer in the Arts Award from the National Black Arts Festival.

At the heart of his success is a commitment to truth in storytelling. “At an early age, somebody told me, ‘a song is the recording of the event that just happened to you.’ That’s why they called it a record,” Austin explains. “Great songs come from truth.”

Raised in Columbus, Georgia, Austin grew up surrounded by music—his mother owned a nightclub in the 1970s where musicians regularly came to play. His family became close with James Brown’s band, and it was Brown’s guitarist who first showed young Dallas how to play. Inspired by Prince’s artistry, he taught himself guitar, then moved on to piano and keyboards by studying the work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. He even taught himself drums. By the time he was 13, he had already built a foundation as a multi-instrumentalist and moved to Atlanta to chase his dream of becoming a producer. His mother sold her business to support him, setting the stage for his legendary career.

Dallas scored his first placement in 1987 with “Cover Girl” for Princess & Starbreeze, which opened the door to an era-defining career. From “Unpretty” and “Creep” with TLC to “Motownphilly” with Boyz II Men, “Cool” with Gwen Stefani, and “FourFiveSeconds” with Rihanna, Kanye West, and Paul McCartney, Austin has shaped generations of popular music. His collaborations span icons like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Lionel Richie, Natalie Cole, Duran Duran, and Sia, as well as contemporary voices like Cedric Gervais, Kodie Shane, and Klondie Blonde.

His creative reach extends beyond music into film. Drawing from his own experiences growing up in 1980s Georgia, Austin produced two culture-defining films: Drumline (2002) and ATL (2006), which grossed more than $100 million worldwide. His advocacy also helped secure Georgia’s landmark film tax incentive, which has since turned the state into a global hub for film and television production, generating billions for the economy.

As a DJ, Austin has performed internationally in Ibiza, Tokyo, Mykonos, London, Nice, Montenegro, and St. Tropez, with appearances at high-profile events like the Super Bowl and Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. DJing, he says, keeps him connected to the pulse of music: “It’s a great way to tap into fresh energy and stay current.”

 

Never one to stand still, Austin continues to innovate in music and technology. In 2021, he launched Dallas Austin Distribution (DAD), a next-generation music distribution company focused on transparency and artist empowerment. Partnering with Brandon Tory, he developed proprietary technology that allows artists to set their own streaming rates and get paid instantly through Apple Pay and Google Pay—eliminating the traditional wait for royalties and giving creators control over their income.

Beyond music and film, Austin’s Rowdy Collection apparel brand has thrived for over two decades, and his Dallas Austin Foundation continues to support music education by building studios in public schools and creating opportunities for the next generation of artists.
